And they also are built for less powerful engines (less chassis bracing/material, smaller and lighter clutch, flywheel, driveshaft, transmission, differential, halfshafts, etc.). So bigger and more powerful engines have an added mass penalty far beyond the weight of the engine itself. I don't know what the rigidity numbers are for those cars, but I doubt they're very high for Civics and 240SX's compared to, say a 350Z or a slicktop Z32. And in any case, the weight difference is not primarily attributable to accesories. In other words, you can't make a Z into an Elise by removing all the creature comforts.
